Pathcare in conjunction with Classic Fm organized a free medical service for Nigerians on the 28th of July, 2012.

Trust as always, Nigerians came out en-mass to get whatever medical opportunity that was available to them on that day.

Services which were rendered were Diabetes screening blood donations, eye test, dental check, Cholesterol check, Cervical screening, Fertility check, family planning, heart and kidney tests, Hepatitis screening, gastric and neurological screening amongst others.

I spoke with one of the organizers from Pathcare who told me the concept behind this service. In his own words. “The initiative behind this free medical treatment is to offer quality healthcare which is expensive, to loads of Nigerians out there.” He also added that inorder to achieve this, a group of medical professionals and practitioners came together to render services to Nigerians who were in attendance.

I also spoke with a medical doctor from Nathan Kidney foundation who told me about the turn out of Nigerians. She said that about 500 people were at the venue but they could only attend to about 350 due to time constraint. She added that this service was organized last year and that she looks forward to it being a quarterly program.
She said that some patients were open to telling all their concerns in order to get full treatment while others still withheld their cases.
She spoke of one family man in particular who shed tears about his own situation and was immensely grateful for this opportunity to get medical aid.

I got the opportunity to talk to a few people who came for treatment. Some were happy about this initiative while others said they would come for the next one. Talk about different strokes for different folks.

All in all, it was a good inititiative and ended well with lots of food and drinks and entertainment dished out to those who were present.

As part of a beauty regimen that you should cultivate here are a some healthy foods (which are readily available at any market or fruit stall) that does wonders to the body and improves healthy living….

Strawberries have more anti-aging vitamin C per serving than oranges or grapefruit and people who eat foods rich in vitamin C have fewer wrinkles and less age-related dry skin than those who don’t. Vitamin C fights free radicals, which damage cells and break down collagen, leading to fine lines. For smoother, better-hydrated skin, apply a natural berry mask once or twice a week, and eat vitamin C rich foods daily.

Olive oil

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of olive oil don’t just benefit you on the inside—they soften your skin, too. Ancient Romans massaged olive oil into their skin. When applied topically, olive oil results in smoother, more radiant skin. Plus, consuming olive oil, provides antioxidants to disarm free radicals and reduce inflammation. In addition to working olive oil into your daily diet, apply as a lip gloss and skin soother, as needed. If you have dry skin, you’ll particularly benefit from topical application.

Green tea

Drinking a cup of green tea does a lot more than relax you. Green tea is filled with inflammation-fighting antioxidants. Research shows that drinking green tea may reduce your risk of skin cancer. And when you add a generous squeeze of citrus juice, the tea’s antioxidants get a boost of staying power, so they remain in and benefit the body longer, rather than being digested quickly and having much of the goodness go down the drain. You could also chill damp tea bags in the fridge and put on eyes for 10–15 minutes. Green tea contains tannins, which act as an astringent when applied to skin and can help reduce puffiness.

Pomegranates are one of the most antioxidant-rich fruits. Research shows this fruit’s juice has more inflammation-fighting antioxidants than red wine or green tea. Eat some fresh pomegranate or use it in an age-fighting scrub. Apply once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells.

So start eating healthy and live a longer life.

Makeup Straight From The Kitchen

Ladies, here’s what I found out. You won’t believe how innovative we can be in just enhancing beauty. I tried out some of these tips and they worked swell. You should try them out too and leave a comment on your findings.

At home, all natural beauty care and makeup is something many women have experimented with over the years. Whether it was your teen years when your mother wouldn’t buy that expensive lip gloss and you tried to make it yourself, or when you were older and wanted to save some money or use more natural items, chances are you have found a beauty or health care tip from your own kitchen or bathroom shelf that works in a pinch.

Here are some beauty tips for using all natural, at home makeup and beauty aids, without spending a small fortune. Why don’t you tell us what exploration you have done with makeup from your kitchen.

Lip Care

Most beauty stores sell those tiny round tins or plastic containers with lids that screw on, much like the children’s lip gloss, and you can usually buy them in bulk for just a few naira. Using Cherry makes a dark red and mixing a small amount of the powder color of choice with inexpensive petroleum jelly, and you have a nice flavored lip gloss.

TIP: Mix the powder thoroughly to avoid lumps and clumps and make an even shade. These make great gifts for teenagers and young girls, and even have a great flavor!

If you want a long lasting color on your lips, mash the juice from fresh carrot or strawberry and then using a cotton swab, carefully outline the shape of your lips with the carrot or strawberry juice and then color in the rest of your lips. This will provide long lasting color that will stay on through eating, swimming, sweating – you name it!

If the color is too dark, mixing with a little petroleum jelly will lighten the color and provide some gloss, or you can mix more of the juice for less gloss but a smoother, easier to apply lip color.

Vitamin E capsules can provide many skin care benefits, one of which is a great lip gloss that moisturizes and protects your lips while acting as a light gloss. Simply cut or poke the end of a vitamin E capsule and squeeze for the oil to come out, and apply directly with your finger or a cotton swab.

Skin Care

Ph Balance

Using an inexpensive spray bottle, add one part distilled vinegar to three parts distilled water, and shake vigorously. This works like a Ph toner and skin balancer. You can add essential oil fragrances to add to the therapeutic benefits, such as tea tree oil and lavender, both of which are antibacterial and antimicrobial and have been shown to help with acne control. Spray the mixture on your face or dab a cotton ball into the mixture and smooth evenly on the face.

Hair Care with Zero worries!!!

We all want healthy and beautiful, shiny hair, but we can’t all afford those expensive hair care products in the market today. With those salon shampoos costing anywhere zillions of naira per bottle, colorings in the salon, shiners and glossers, hot oil treatments, collagen gels, and on and on…

But when it comes right down to it, you don’t need all of those expensive salon products to have beautiful, shiny, soft and luxurious hair. To start with, let’s talk about things you can do for your hair besides applying products that will automatically help your hair be healthier:

Don’t wash your hair every day

Unless you have a very oily scalp or work out or sweat during the day, your hair is most likely not dirty enough to need to be washed every single day. In fact, hair will often set better and hold a style better when it is not freshly washed.

Don’t blow dry your hair

Whenever possible, and time permitting, let your washed and combed hair dry naturally. Blow drying your hair adds both heat and friction, and those both bad for your hair.

Don’t use styling sprays or hair spray

These will dry out your hair, make it brittle, and cause split ends. Your best bet is to find a stylist to cut your hair in such a way that it needs minimal styling and preparation.

Get your hair trimmed regularly

Yes, only a woman would know that to grow your hair, you must cut it. Trimming your hair regularly and properly will get rid of the drier ends and keep them from splitting, which damages your hair.

Okay, now on to the products you can use, all natural, and many found right in your kitchen cabinets.

Rosemary stimulates hair follicles and has been shown to help prevent baldness. Rosemary oil is best for this, and can be found in most any health food store or stores for making scented items. Lightly heat the oil and massage into the scalp for several minutes, then let sit for several minutes, and then down the hair shafts before rinsing with warm clear water.

Avocado not only contains natural oils, but it also contains vitamins B6 and E, often found in the more expensive hair care products in the store shelves. Crushing avocado, and mixing with one or more of the ingredients mentioned here will make a great paste to deep condition your tresses. Leave on for at least 20 minutes for maximum effect.

Mayo has fatty acid and fat, or oils in it, that will deep condition your hair. Don’t not rub it into your scalp, because it is very oily and hard to remove. Mayo is best applied from below the ear down, and will deep condition those drier split ends. Mayo is good for mixing with avocado and is used the same way.

For really soft hair, whisk a couple of eggs in a bowl, apply to your hair, let it dry and then rinse it all out. Follow this with a light vinegar rinse, as this helps you strip any residual egg product from your hair and you are left with clean and soft, conditioned hair. Egg can also be mixed with other ingredients listed here with the same effect.

Did you know that even your shampoo can cause buildup on your hair and eventually make your hair dull and dingy? One way to combat that is to use a vinegar rinse on your hair about once a month. Using three parts water, one part vinegar, you can spray or soak your hair in this solution to remove any chemical, pollution, or shampoo and conditioner buildup and you will find that your hair is much easier to manage and style.

Use plain yogurt in much the same way you would use mayonnaise on your hair. This can also be mixed with avocado or eggs and oils. Yogurt provides a similar effect to mayonnaise, but is good to use for people who don’t like the smell of mayo or who may be allergic to eggs (an ingredient in many mayonnaises.)

Hot Oil

Forget about the small tube of hot oil. You can make your own! Canola oil is the best, because it is all natural and contains no additional ingredients. While you can use vegetable oil, it is not recommended, because vegetable oil doesn’t seem to rinse as clean as canola oil does. Mineral oil is a good choice too, provided it is all natural with no fragrances. Baby oil is not recommended, because it contains fragrance, in the form of alcohol, and will actually make your hair drier, not conditioned. Warm the oil by placing it in the microwave for a few seconds, but be sure not to get it too hot and burn yourself or your scalp.

Peaches, Watermelon, Cucumber

Fruit for your hair! Seriously, crush any of these items and rub them into your hair or mix them with the thicker more substantial items and not only will your hair be conditioned, but it will smell fantastic too!

Word of warning…Many people have claimed that using beer on hair is a good option, and while it will strip things from your hair, much like the vinegar will, beer actually contains alcohol (who would have thought that!) and alcohol dries your hair out. Beer is not a good option for conditioning or managing hair.

This is just a list of a few normal households items you might find in your own kitchen that can help you have a luxurious head of healthy hair while saving big bucks on the more expensive products that actually contain things that are bad for your hair along with these good things mentioned here. Give some of them a try – you won’t be disappointed!
